Three levers, and an order

Reducing an energy bill goes through habits and control, through the building envelope, then through the emitter. That order is not arbitrary: it ranks the actions by the ratio between what they cost and what they return.

The first lever costs almost nothing

Fine control, room by room, with periods matched to real occupancy. No works, no materials, and a measurable effect from the first season. It is also the lever most homes have not yet pulled.

The second pays back best over time

The envelope. A ceiling, a roof or a loft treated act every day for the whole life of the building, with no maintenance and no consumption. It is a slow, lasting investment, the opposite of replacing an appliance.

The third logically comes last

The emitter. Changing a heating system in a poorly insulated and poorly controlled home amounts to optimising the end of a chain whose beginning leaks. The reverse order is nonetheless the one most often met.

Why an evening on the subject draws people

Because the question interests everyone and the answers travel badly. A private person receives sales proposals, rarely a line of reasoning, and a meeting makes it possible to rebuild the order of priorities.

What you can check yourself

Two consumption readings over the same period in two different years, corrected for outdoor temperatures. It is the only honest measure of progress, and it asks only for a little patience. Without that correction, a mild season gives the illusion of a saving the works did not produce.

The three strategies are developed on the dedicated page, and control on the scenarios page.
