, Invisible sound systems
In almost every poorly covered space, the equipment delivers enough power. What is missing is the distribution: too loud near the source, too weak at the back, and uneven everywhere in between.
A conventional speaker concentrates its energy in a cone. It covers perfectly what it aims at and leaves behind everything outside that axis, which suits seated, fixed listening perfectly.
People standing, furniture, partial partitions: every obstacle creates an acoustic shadow behind it. Adding speakers reduces the problem and creates another, that of delays between sources.
An omnidirectional source radiates in every direction at once. The sound bypasses obstacles instead of being stopped by them, which fills complex spaces without having to aim at anything.
A directional source is pointed, an omnidirectional source is positioned. The question becomes that of the centre of the area to cover rather than the angle of dispersion, which considerably simplifies an installation.
The acoustic treatment of the room. A good source in a reverberant space remains a good source in a reverberant space, and both subjects are dealt with together rather than one in place of the other. In a very bare room, absorption often brings more than changing the equipment.
Acoustic treatment is developed on the R'Acoustic 20 page, and the product on its page.
