Six and a half metres to the ceiling

That is the height of the space on this job, over ninety square metres. With an air based system the useful layer would have sat in the first metre and a half and the rest would have served to heat a reserve of air nobody could reach. The problem was therefore not the power to install, but where it was going.

The answer chosen

A heated stretch ceiling with passive energy recovery. The principle is to close the volume above the fabric with reflective insulation, then heat that whole plenum rather than a single point.

Why the sealed air gap counts more here

In a large volume the loss surface of the ceiling is considerable. A closed air gap between the insulation and the fabric stops the heat produced from reaching the original substrate, and it is that seal which makes the result comparable to an ordinary room.

What the occupant feels

The whole ceiling emits at a temperature close to that of skin. There is no hot spot and no cold zone, and the sensation does not change according to where you stand in the space, which is rarely the case in a large volume.

Assembly on site

The system arrives ready to fit, which shortens the time spent at height. In a space 6.50 m high every hour on a platform counts, and cutting nothing on site changes the economics of the job as much as its safety.

The question of height is developed on the page about high ceilings, and the recovery principle on the passive heating page.
