How to heat a toilet

The room nobody heats

A separate toilet is often under two square metres, has no free wall, and no window. No radiator fits without getting in the way of the door or of using the room. So in the end nothing goes in, and people accept that it is cold for six months of the year.

Why that is a nuisance nonetheless

It is the room where you undress briefly, several times a day, often first thing. A room at fifteen degrees is markedly less pleasant there than a corridor at the same temperature, because the body is exposed and still.

The only surface left

The ceiling. It is clear, it covers the whole area of the room, and it faces the occupant. A heating element finds room there within five centimetres, without eating into a space that is already counted.

The power needed

It is low, because the room is small and the occupation brief. What matters is not the power but the warm-up time: the comfort has to arrive in a few minutes, not in half an hour. That is exactly what a low inertia system does.

The right control

A low setpoint held permanently, with a boost triggered by the schedule at the hours of use, is enough. Heating continuously a room occupied for a few minutes a day would make no sense, and a high inertia system leaves no choice.

The neighbouring case of the bathroom is dealt with on the page devoted to it, and the system on the Ceilingo radiant plaster ceiling page.
