What directivity does

In audio as it stands today, a directional source concentrates its energy in a cone. It covers perfectly what it aims at, and leaves behind whatever falls outside that axis.

The perceived result therefore varies with where the listener stands, particularly away from the axis of the source.

Adding more sources

Covering a large space then means adding sources and subwoofers, then aligning the delays between them, which raises both the cost and the complexity of the installation.

Acoustics, energy use and comfort

This shows up as zones that hear better than others, marked differences in level, reverberation off walls and glazing, and an average level higher than needed to reach the back of the room.

Another way of spreading sound through a space

Mindful of energy sobriety, we looked at the heat pump for its ability to return more heat than the electricity it consumes.

To get sound intensity without spending energy, the Magic Speaker reproduces the dynamics of a whip, whose minimal movement at the base becomes considerable speed at the tip.

Kinetic energy travelling from the base towards the tip of the whip is amplified, producing a powerful crack with a minimum of initial effort.

Sound amplification

That is how the Magic Speaker turns a modest sound energy into an enveloping acoustic field, with an energy efficiency that is unusual in this field.

The Magic Speaker channels and amplifies sound energy through a vibrating acoustic blade, giving an enveloping and powerful sound across the whole audio range from a reduced amount of electrical energy.

That optimisation improves the reach and the quality of the projected sound, turning a moderate sound energy into an immersive and even listening field.

Magic Speaker allows a wider and more present distribution while preserving the clarity and the richness of the sound, and the intelligibility of speech, in the highs as much as in the low end.

Average level, a design objective

Listening comfort depends as much on how the sound is spread as on its level. Even coverage avoids having to raise the volume to reach the back of a room.

The Magic Speaker does not simply remove the usual acoustic faults; it aims at a lower average level for the same perceived comfort.

By channelling sound like the waves of the ocean, gentle and powerful at once, it gives the same sound presence at a lower level than a directional source placed far from the listener.
