The sound of an instrument, the power of a speaker.

The phrase describes the principle exactly. A musical instrument produces its timbre through a piece of wood set vibrating, not through a cone pushing air. Magic Speaker takes up that mechanism and adds to it the power expected of a speaker.

The vibrating blade

It is poplar, sanded to grain three thousand and then sealed. That is not a finishing detail: the surface state and the density of the wood determine how the blade enters into vibration and the timbre it returns.

Transverse waves

In the blade, the material moves perpendicular to the direction of propagation. It is the vibration regime of a plate, that of a soundboard, and it radiates in every direction instead of projecting along an axis.

The pairing with a subwoofer

The blade excels in the mid and high register. Bass calls for a movement of air that its surface cannot produce alone, which is why the system pairs a subwoofer with wide-band speakers.

Diffraction, a strength

An omnidirectional source emits in every direction at once, which lets the sound bypass obstacles and fill a cluttered space. Where a directional source leaves dead zones behind every piece of furniture, diffraction fills those gaps.

A complement as much as an alternative

The system finds its place where even coverage counts for more than precise localisation: open spaces, complex volumes, places where the audience moves about. It adds to an existing installation as readily as it replaces one.
