What an evening asks of a source

To cover a space where people move about, gather at random and talk at the same time as the music. None of those three conditions is found in seated listening, and they rule out arrangements optimised for a single point.

The problem of placement

At a party, nobody settles facing the source. A directional speaker then has to be reaimed according to where the group forms, and that constraint disappears with a source radiating in every direction.

Level and conversation

Music too loud kills conversation, music too quiet disappears. The margin is narrow, and even coverage makes it possible to stay within that margin everywhere instead of at one spot only.

What distribution changes

It avoids having to raise the volume to reach the back of the room. The average level falls, fatigue decreases, and the neighbours are better off, which is a concrete benefit rather than an argument.

The object in the room

A source meant to stay visible is also judged on its appearance. An evening is prepared in a chosen interior, and an object you do not want to hide comes out more often than a piece of sound equipment.

What to check first

The acoustics of the room. A very reverberant space turns music into mush as soon as the level rises, and no source corrects that, whatever its operating principle.
