80% of homes in France are at risk of becoming unliveable in summer, according to Météo France projections. Summer comfort has become a serious question for health, for energy performance and for whether a home remains habitable at all.
As heatwaves become more frequent, a great many homes turn into ovens from June onwards. By 2050 the average temperature in France could rise by 2.7 °C. Homes that are poorly insulated or poorly ventilated store that heat and become unliveable in summer, which is dangerous for anyone frail, elderly or very young.
Faced with the discomfort, many households install air conditioning or reversible heat pumps. These carry a real environmental and financial cost: they use a great deal of electricity, lose efficiency above 35 °C, and discharge their heat into the surrounding urban air. They treat the symptom.
What decides summer comfort is insulation that keeps heat out rather than trapping it inside, which is what certain mineral products end up doing. Conventional materials such as glass wool and polystyrene have a short thermal lag: the heat crosses them within a few hours, and then stays in the house.
R'BULL is a multilayer thermo-reflective insulation designed to stop heat before it enters the building. It acts as a shield against infrared, sending back up to 95% of thermal radiation. Fitted to a roof, a rafter line or a loft, it holds the indoor temperature far steadier and cuts the need to run air conditioning at all.
Very thin, light and quick to fit, it suits detached houses, industrial buildings and housing in tropical territories, where it has been in widespread use for years.
With the climate changing, insulation needs rethinking. Summer comfort should become a criterion in energy performance assessments, alongside winter consumption, rather than an afterthought.R'BULL offers a technical answer that lasts and costs little to run, to reduce overheating in homes and protect the health of the people living in them.
