Cooling is not air conditioning

Insulation does not produce cold. It has no compressor, no refrigerant and no consumption. What it does is different and often more useful: it stops heat coming in, which saves having to extract it afterwards.

Where summer heat in a home comes from

Three main paths: exposed glazing, the roof heated by the sun, and warm air entering through openings. Each is dealt with differently, and confusing the three leads to equipping a house that did not need it.

What the product deals with

The second path. A low emissivity face fitted under the covering sends back a significant share of the radiation emitted by the hot tiles, before it reaches the ceiling of the occupied rooms.

What it does not deal with

A south facing window with no shading, and a home whose windows are never opened at night. No insulation makes up for those two points, and saying so avoids a disappointment that always turns against the product.

The logical order of works

Protect the glazing, insulate the roof, ventilate at night. Once those three points are dealt with, the question of air conditioning often arises differently, sometimes with a far lower output than first considered.

The same product serves in winter

A reflective face does not distinguish the direction of radiation. It sends back the heat arriving in July and holds back the heat leaving in January, which is the very definition of a passive device.

Behaviour under roofs is developed on the dedicated page, and the product on its data sheet.
