What went wrong with the first heated ceilings

The heating films or panels were often laid in a staggered pattern to spread the heat more evenly.

That arrangement produced wide temperature differences across the plasterboard.

Some areas sat directly beneath a heating element while others had nothing but insulation above them.

Over time the plaster dried out unevenly and cracks appeared along the joints between boards, which is exactly the defect nobody wants to see.

Special plasterboard as an answer

To deal with it, some manufacturers developed plasterboard designed specifically to limit the problem.

But stock was rarely available and suppliers required a full pallet minimum, which held the whole approach back.
