Stretch ceilings and insulation

Three configurations, three answers

A stretch ceiling is fitted under a slab, under a loft or under an intermediate floor. The value of adding insulation is not the same in the three cases, and that is the first question to settle before discussing any product.

Under a loft or a roof

That is the configuration where the gain is clearest. The ceiling separates a heated room from a volume that is cold in winter and burning in summer. Closing the plenum with a reflector therefore works both ways all year.

Under an intermediate floor

Between two heated levels, the loss is small and the energy gain stays modest. The value shifts towards acoustic comfort and towards returning radiation if the ceiling is heated.

Under a slab over an unheated space

Garage, cellar, covered passage: the situation resembles that of a loft. The ceiling becomes a separating surface between two environments, and it deserves the same treatment as under a roof.

The special case of a heating ceiling

Whatever the configuration, an emitter also radiates upwards. The insulation sends that share back into the room, and that function remains useful even when the loss to the floor above is negligible.

How to know which case you are in

By looking at what is above, and at what temperature. It is a two minute question that determines all the rest, and it is asked before the first quotation rather than after the fitting. A ground floor ceiling under a heated bedroom and an upstairs ceiling under an unused loft do not call for the same spending, although they look alike from below.

The role of the plenum is developed on the dedicated page, and the product on its data sheet.
