Table Bass Ceilingo: furniture that becomes a source

A piece of furniture that becomes a source

A coffee table offers a large flat surface, placed at the centre of the room, at roughly equal distance from the seats. No other piece of furniture combines those three qualities, and that is what makes it a coherent acoustic support rather than an exercise in style.

Why the low position works

Listeners are seated. A source at table level is in the same plane as they are, with no obstacle in between, and its distance to each seat varies far less than that of a speaker against a wall.

What the top brings

A wide surface radiates more broadly than a driver a few centimetres across. The sound no longer has an identifiable point of origin, which matches exactly what is expected of ambient listening in a living room.

The constraint specific to furniture

Objects get put on it. A glass, a book or a tray changes the vibration of the surface, and that reality is taken into account at design stage rather than discovered in use.

The bass

It calls for a movement of air the top alone does not produce. The system therefore keeps a bass reinforcement, and that division is the same as in the other versions.

What it replaces

Nothing compulsorily. A sound emitting piece of furniture finds its place beside an existing installation as readily as in place of one, and it answers above all the case of a living room where no extra object is wanted.

The principle is developed on the Magic Speaker page, and ceiling sound on the dedicated page.
