The Ceilingo magic table

A table is a surface nobody looks at

A table top is flat, rigid, often large, and nobody looks at it. That is exactly the profile of a technical substrate: it can carry underneath whatever you would rather not see, without its use changing or its appearance suffering.

What the prototype filmed set out to establish

The question was not whether a table could heat or carry sound, but whether it could do both without one getting in the way of the other. A top that vibrates and a top that heats impose different constraints on the bonding and on the choice of timber, and that is where feasibility is decided.

What a table can carry

Heating, cooling, sound, video, changing colour, an induction hob. Each of those functions fits under the top or within its thickness. None of them shows when the table is switched off.

Why every table is one of a kind

The functions chosen determine the thickness, the species of timber, the fixing method and the cable routing. Two tables that look the same can therefore be built differently. There is no catalogue because there is no standard configuration.

From prototype to product

This table was a test bench. It gave rise to a product in its own right, with settled dimensions, uses and options. What was left to decide came down to three points: the thickness of the top, the power it could take without the timber moving, and how to bring the cables out without seeing them.

The finished product is presented on the Ceilingo immersion table page, and the sound demonstration on the sound coffee table page.

The finished version of this table

The prototype filmed here became a product in its own right. The Table Bass page sets out its dimensions, its uses and its options, from a living room to a therapy room.
