What training must make you able to do alone

Three things and no more: knowing how to survey a room, how to size, and how to fit without rework. Everything beyond those three skills belongs to documentation and can be looked up, whereas these are acquired by doing.

The survey

It is the part trainees underestimate most. Measuring a height at a single point, forgetting a shutter box or overlooking existing services produces an error that no later calculation puts right.

Sizing

It is the skill that takes longest to embed durably. It requires understanding why two rooms identical in area call for different outputs, and that understanding is not replaced by a chart.

Fitting

It is learned quickly by anyone who already knows how to tension a fabric. What is added lies in preparing the plenum, fixing the elements and the checks before closing up, that is, a workshop day for an experienced professional.

What training does not do

It does not replace the first jobs. A trainee leaves knowing what to do, not yet knowing how to do it fast, and the gap between the two closes over the first five installations.

The value of a group

Every participant brings a case the others have not met. A beamed ceiling, a damp room, a doubtful substrate: those examples are worth as much as the programme, and they appear in no course material.
