What an evening asks of a sound emitting piece of furniture

Mechanical strength, stability and a sustained level over several hours. Those are not the same requirements as ambient listening, and an object that meets the second well does not automatically meet the first.

Load

A piece of furniture people lean on, put glasses on or climb on takes forces no listening produces. The structure is sized for that real use rather than for the intended one.

Vibration passed into the floor

A surface vibrating in contact with the floor passes part of its energy into it. On a timber floor or in a flat, that transmission concerns the neighbour below more than the listener.

Level and its limit

Every source has a point beyond which it stops reproducing cleanly. Knowing that point and respecting it preserves both the equipment and the quality, and a successful evening depends more on distribution than on maximum level.

The question of neighbours

Bass crosses walls more easily than the rest of the spectrum. It is what causes problems in a block, and reducing it moderately changes the situation more than an overall drop in volume.

What to check afterwards

The fixings. Several hours of sustained vibration loosen whatever was not properly tightened, and a check after the first intensive use avoids a parasitic noise appearing later. Ten minutes of verification are worth more than a full dismantling three months on.

The principle is presented on the Magic Speaker page, and ceiling sound on the dedicated page.
