Which form of heating gives the most even temperature

Even means two things

The temperature difference between floor and ceiling, called the vertical gradient, and the difference between two points in the room at the same height. A system can be good on one and mediocre on the other, and both are measured separately.

The vertical gradient

A convection system produces warm air that rises and gathers under the ceiling. The higher the room, the greater the difference between ankles and head, and it is that difference the occupant feels as permanent discomfort.

The horizontal difference

A single emitter set against a wall creates a warm zone nearby and a cold zone opposite. Adding appliances reduces the difference without removing it, because the problem comes from the source being concentrated.

Why a large surface settles both

A radiant ceiling occupies the whole area of the room and emits downwards. There is no horizontal hot spot and no build-up of warm air above, since air is not the vehicle of the transfer.

What remains unavoidable

A glazed bay stays colder than the walls, whatever the emitter. The evenness of a system does not make up for a weak surface, and the two subjects are dealt with together rather than one against the other.

How to check it at home

A thermometer at floor level and one at head height, in the same room, on a cold day. Two readings are enough to rank a system, and they say more than any sales argument.

The principle is developed on the inspired by the sun page, and the comparison on the underfloor heating page.
