The other side of invisibility

Hidden equipment can no longer be seen, and therefore no longer repaired by observation. What is built into a surface must be documented at the moment it is closed up, failing which nobody will know what lies behind it in fifteen years.

The zone drawing

It is the most important document of an invisible installation. It shows where the elements run, how they are supplied and where not to drill, and it is worth more than a generic manual because it describes this particular job.

The photographs before closing up

Three images are enough: the insulated plenum, the fixed elements, the labelled connections. They cost nothing to take and become the only visual record of what exists above the ceiling.

Labelling the circuits

A clearly labelled distribution board allows a zone to be isolated without searching. It is ten minutes' work at commissioning, and it saves half a day at every future visit.

What must stay accessible

The connection points and, where possible, an access hatch. An integrated system does not need to be demountable everywhere, it needs to be reachable where it can fail.

What it is worth on resale

A complete file handed to a buyer turns mysterious equipment into documented equipment. It is a concrete argument, and it cannot be manufactured after the event. A buyer handed a zone drawing and three photographs is buying equipment they understand, not equipment they inherit.

The fitting is set out on the five stages page, and the system on heated radiant stretch ceiling.
