Fire test on the Ceilingo eFilm heating film

A heating film is not insulation like any other

Insulation is passive. A heating film is energised continuously, it rises in temperature by design, and it sits above people's heads, usually covered by another material. Three reasons to ask more of it than of a mineral wool, which only has to stay where it was put.

What the test checks

The flame is applied directly to the film, on the active face and on the back face. What we are looking for is simple: does the material sustain combustion once the source is removed, and does it drip. Those are the two mechanisms by which a material turns a small fire into a large one.

Why we chose to treat both faces

A heating film ends up between a plasterboard and an insulation layer, or between a stretch fabric and an air gap. Fire can therefore reach it from below as easily as from above. Treating one face only would amount to protecting half the product.

eFilm is a carbon heating film with tinned copper conductors, guaranteed for 25 years. That guarantee is set out on the 25 year guarantee page, and the flame retardant treatment on the flame retardant heating films page. To see the product fitted, the full installation is filmed in our installation tutorial.

What the guarantee covers, and what it does not

Our heating films are guaranteed for twenty-five years, public liability cover included. That guarantee covers the product and its installation according to our instructions. It does not cover a film cut on site outside the intended zones, nor a supply wired outside the specified cable sections. Those two points account for very nearly all disputes.
