Outdoors raises two different problems

Water and acoustics. The first concerns how the material lasts over time, the second concerns how sound behaves with no surrounding surfaces. The two are dealt with separately and are often confused.

The water-repellent treatment

It limits the absorption of water by the surface of the wood. It is not total waterproofing, it is a reduction of the speed at which moisture penetrates, which is enough to preserve the stability of the blade in sheltered outdoor use.

What moisture changes in a blade

Wood that absorbs water gains mass and loses stiffness. Both change its vibration, which is why the surface treatment is an acoustic question as much as a durability one.

Acoustics with no surrounding surfaces

Outside, there are almost no reflections. The sound does not come back, reverberation disappears, and a source that seemed powerful indoors suddenly sounds modest in a garden.

What omnidirectional brings outdoors

Even coverage with no favoured direction. On a terrace where people move about and gather at random, that is exactly what avoids having to reaim a speaker according to where the guests happen to stand.

What must be provided all the same

Shelter. A treated blade withstands airborne moisture and splashes, not permanent exposure to rain, and that distinction is stated before purchase rather than after the first storm.
