Minimum ceiling height for a radiant ceiling

Three heights not to confuse

The height of the existing ceiling, the height of the finished ceiling and the clear height left under the low points. A quotation that does not distinguish those three values is preparing an unpleasant surprise at handover.

The habitability threshold

Practice commonly takes two metres twenty as the minimum height for a room to count as habitable. Going below changes the nature of the room in the paperwork as much as in the value of the property, and that is checked before the study.

What the system really takes

A few centimetres, between the perimeter rail, the heating element, the insulation and the air gap needed. The exact figure depends on the configuration and is surveyed on site rather than estimated over the phone.

Comfort at low height

The closer the emitter is to the head, the more the difference in radiation between the upper and lower body is felt. It is a question of comfort and not of safety, and it is dealt with by lowering the output per square metre.

The trade-off

Under a limited height, the same output is spread over a larger part of the ceiling rather than raising the temperature. The calculation changes, the result stays comfortable, but it has to be set out from the start.

The forgotten low points

Exposed beam, shutter box, service duct, door lintel. Those are what set the real usable height, and the survey measures them one by one rather than taking a dimension in the middle of the room.

Made to measure is developed on the dedicated page, and the system on heated radiant stretch ceiling.
